當(dāng)年手工制作的大理石欄桿線條， 沒(méi)有扎實(shí)的基本功，根本沒(méi)辦法完成。”20世紀(jì)70年代，蔣耀輝在當(dāng)?shù)匾呀?jīng)小有名氣，他參與了1977年北京毛主席紀(jì)念堂工程建設(shè)。提起當(dāng)年的建設(shè)景，蔣耀輝仍記憶猶新。從事雕刻30多年來(lái)，他致力吸收現(xiàn)代美學(xué)的審美元素加以強(qiáng)烈現(xiàn)，在繼承傳統(tǒng)雕刻藝術(shù)的基礎(chǔ)上推陳出新，開(kāi)發(fā)出漢白龍眼面肌理。

作為大理石欄桿雕刻蔣家的代表之一，蔣耀輝的名字常常被業(yè)內(nèi)人士提起，這源于他與眾不同的藝術(shù)理念。他的大理石欄桿雕刻作品從不走他人的路子，力求開(kāi)創(chuàng)自己的特色。他曾說(shuō)，打石頭也要琢天地之精華，傳人間之韻。

在“大理石欄桿雕刻之鄉(xiāng)”，早年臺(tái)灣建筑界就對(duì)來(lái)自崇武的蔣姓師傅非常推崇，有“無(wú)蔣不成場(chǎng)”的說(shuō)法。福建省工藝美術(shù)大師蔣耀輝就是蔣氏雕刻的傳承人之一。
